What makes National Chicks superior?
We supply broiler chicks to the independent market and are integrally involved in every aspect of the supply chain, from the production of the grandparent stock, who produce the best genetic breeding stock, to the hatching of day-old chicks, hand-selection, and delivery (according to strict animal welfare principles), to on-farm placement and personal technical assistance to ensure optimal broiler performance.
Stringent biosecurity
We comply with the code of practice laid down by the Southern African Poultry Association (SAPA) for the treatment of livestock. We ensure hatching egg and hatchery hygiene to ensure chicks are superior in quality from day 1.
Bird health and welfare
We consider the wellbeing of our biological assets, the chickens, and safety of derivative products (poultry meat and meat products) for human consumption as paramount. This is achieved through implementation of the SAPA’s Code of Practice that serves as a guide on standards for bird welfare. As none of our chickens are kept in cages, floors in all houses are bedded with clean good quality wood shavings, sunflower husks or wheat straw that keep the birds dry and warm and enable them to scratch and wallow. The bedding that our chicks are placed on in the houses is turned to prevent excessively wet or uncomfortable conditions. Our chicken houses are specifically designed for optimum ventilation and temperature control.
Technical and veterinarian support
National Chicks has a dedicated team of veterinarians and technical advisors who offer added value to farmers, including the best veterinary, farming, and nutritional practices.
Quality control assurance
We integrate the 20 Keys principle towards continuous improvement, productivity, quality, stringent biosecurity, and the long-term sustainability of our own and partners businesses.
Consistent supply
National Chicks has a footprint throughout South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland, and Lesotho and we offer same-day delivery across these four countries with specially equipped vehicles. We have 11 breeder farms with 41 sites and 185 poultry houses. National Chicks also uses contract hatching egg producers, with seven farms producing hatching eggs for us.
